Cordia subcordata

The Tou (Polynesian name, Kou in Hawaiʻi) tree (Cordia subcordata) is native from around the Indian Ocean and in the Pacific Ocean. Large ovate leaves, orange tubular flowers, 3 to 5 cm diameter, borne in short stemmed clusters.

The wood of the tree is beautiful, soft but lasting. In ancient Hawaiʻi kou wood was used for cups, dishes and calebashes.
